If you’ve been craving mountain music, handmade art, and a weekend steeped in Southern charm, Dahlonega, Georgia, has your perfect spring getaway. The Bear on the Square Mountain Festival is back this April 26–27, 2025, transforming Dahlonega’s historic town square into a lively celebration of Appalachian culture. This beloved festival is a deep-rooted tribute to the music, stories, and crafts that define the Southern Appalachian spirit—and it all takes place in one of Georgia’s most picturesque mountain towns.
Why “Bear on the Square”?
The Bear in the Square Festival in Dahlonega, Georgia, got its name from a 1996 incident where a bear cub climbed a sycamore tree in the town square, inspiring locals to create a festival celebrating Appalachian culture and heritage.
Here’s a more detailed look at the history:
In 1996, a mama and her two cubs wandered into Dahlonega’s historic public square, causing a stir. While the mama bear and one cub left town, the other cub climbed a sycamore tree in the square, where it remained for several hours. Forest Service Rangers eventually coaxed the cub down from the tree and ensured its safety back into the woods.
